talked with president obama about this. i know he's strongly committed to real immigration reform. would like to see the dream act passed. i'd like to see a number of other things and we'll work on it. one of your fellow graduates of georgetown, senator durbin, deserves every kind of honor and praise for what he's done in the dream act. he'll be very important in this. >> good morning, senator. "the washington post" had a piece yesterday suggesting that you represented perhaps an obstacle to the passage of gun control legislation. i'm wondering -- obviously you do in a sense. but i'm wondering if sort of standard practice in congress should yield to what many perceive to be an extremely urgent situation. >> i think it is an urgent situation and that's why the first hearings held by anybody, house or senate, is going to be by me and my committee in that. i wasn't quite sure who they were writing about when i read the article, but i will strongly defend the press right to print anything they want, accurate or otherwise, but the fact is -- i'm not suggesting whether this was accurate or not

crowley, bureau chief. we talked about the executive orders there and there is real stuff there. the meat of all this is the legislation that obama is proposing and asking congress to act. you have republicans and a number of pro gun democrats including the senate majority leader harry reid who does not seem enthusiastic at the start of the debate right now. realistically, what do you think the most is that we can get out of this in terms of gun control laws? >> not that much. the orders are incremental and they will make some difference. they are not going to solve the problem as it is diagnosed. i don't see action in the congress. i wouldn't be surprised about a fig leaf measure and congress wants to show they did something that is toothless. i think that might be a realistic option. i don't think you will see very much in the way of the package the president proposed unless public opinion does seem to be moving a little bit. after the other big shootings, you don't see sentiment in favor of gun control. if the president wants to keep driving this and followed through more than i and ot

you." you talk to senators and congress mep, as you know, and they feel barack obama doesn't like them or is at least indifferent to them. and so you have all of these conflicts in negotiations, and they end-- look, the president has the upper hand now and will for some time, but you know-- condi rice knows so well-- any negotiation you need to leave the opponent with their dignity. and their-- and the president's going out aed sticking his finger in their eye. >> well, you know, dee dee, it even goes beyond that, what bob says that republicans feel like the president doesn't like them. you hear some people say he-- he really doesn't like the whole process. he didn't like kind of getting his hands dirty with negotiations and stuff. he likes to look at it in a more abstract way. is that true? >> well, it certainly-- you know, he's a politician who doesn't love politics. it's not sure he likes the art of politics and that's a problem >> how you can be a good politician if you don't like politics? >> i think it's created challenges for him. he hasn't built relationships. and i think bob m

of 2006, i think it was, president obama -- and 2008, by the way -- when he was a senator, he talked a lot about the debt ceiling. remember, president bush was in office at the time, so senator obama would probably be against some of the things he was talking about, particularly the debt ceiling. the senator called it irresponsible to increase the debt. listen to then-senator obama. >> the problem is that the way bush has done it over the last eight years is to take out a credit card from the bank of china in the name of our children, driving up our national debt from $5 trillion for the first 42 presidents. number 43 added $4 trillion by his lonesome so we now have over $9 trillion of debt that we are going to have to pay back, $30,000 for every man, woman and child. that's irresponsible. it's unpatriotic. >>steve: there you've got the president, back then senator, back in the day saying that president of ours, he's running up the bills, and it would be unpatriotic what he's doing. and we cannot raise the debt limit. forward to his administration, and i think this is going to be the fourt
